Semester 1

Introduction to Agricultural Economics – Scope and Method, Price Theory and the Functions of the Market with particular reference to Agriculture, Theory of Agricultural Production, Cost Analysis with respect to Agricultural Production, Theory of Distribution.

The course introduces the concept of rurality; importance of rural sociology to national development; factors associated with the settlement pattern of any group of people; typology and the effects of rural infrastructure on rural development; problems of rural school systems and their solutions; significance of economic institutions to the rural farmers; concept of social interactions in the society; the strategies and approaches to rural development; describes the community life process; appreciates the importance of social control; and explains the concept of rural social change.

The course treats the theory and practice of Animal Sciences aimed at producing individuals well-grounded in Livestock Production. The course explores different areas of Animal Sciences such as Animal anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, health etc. However, the following areas of livestock management are given due attentions: Management of different stages, health, principles of disease prevention and control, controlled breeding and housing system in poultry; Management practices in cattle, goat, sheep and rabbit are also given due consideration. Other areas of Livestock production discussed are Animal nutrition, Pasture and range management, Housing systems as well as Processing and handling of animal products.

This course is an introductory course which prepare students for both theoretical and practical courses in higher levels. It provide students with a basic understanding of fishery science; History and practices of fisheries in the world; Ichthyology and its opportunities; basic terminology used in fisheries and aquaculture; know the different kinds of aquatic environment viz: freshwater, brackish water and marine water, and their relevance to fish ecology; Fish biodiversity and conservation; Fish production and sustainability; Various principles and management strategies in fisheries; practical ways used in the World over to ensure sustainable fish production; understand the production, management and marketing techniques of fishes with policies and laws guiding fisheries.

Semester 2

Macro-Economic Theory as it relates to agriculture emphasizing the components of agriculture in national income and in international trade; fiscal and monetary policies as they affect agriculture. Inflation and the Rural Sector.

The course will provide the students the information required for organizing and operating the farm business with a view to generating maximum possible income on a continuous basis. Since farming serves as a source of livelihood to many families in several developing economies, this course is also designed to facilitate the students’ understanding of decision making with respect to optimal uses of farm resources either as farm managers or extension advisory services providers to farm families. Thus after taken this course, the students are expected to understand the principles required for making rational decisions in the allocation of resources and the adoption of new production technologies.

Introduces the basic principles and concepts of Genetics, breeding and improvement of livestock to all agricultural students. Past conceptions of people about heredity, Mendel’s work in the discovery of factors of inheritance, animal cell structure and the important cell components chromosomes, genes and the DNA will be discussed. Qualitative and Quantitative traits, allelic relationships, exceptions to Mendel’s rules, probability, Application of Mendelian genetics to animal improvement and introduction of the concepts of Heritability and Repeatability estimates will be introduced. Topics to be covered include: Production characteristics in various farm animal species. Determination of genetic parameters. Breeding systems, selection methods, and sex determination. Foundation stock in livestock production, Breeding and selection of beef and dairy cattle; performance and progeny testing in beef and dairy cattle and poultry. Improvement of sheep and goats. Gene mutation and variance and covariance, heritability and repeatability.

This is a challenging field which deals with weather and crop and livestock production. The course explain: Principles, aims and scope of climatology; Dynamics of earth atmosphere; Equipment and maintenance of standard meteorological station; General effects of radiation, photoperiodism and humidity on plant growth; Climatological methods for managing farm water resources; Climate change and crops; Impact of climate change on livestock; Modeling biological response to weather conditions and models; Application of crop models; Agro climatological services and; Using climatic information to improve agricultural systems.
